Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. This is Spartacus in one word: velcro! Spartacus (aka Sparty and Spart) most enjoys sleeping on soft beds, lying next to his humans, being with his humans, pleasing his humans, rolling over and getting belly rubs. He is a big goofy 2 year old that tries to lie down and melt into any soft furniture or bed. He loves attention and will lie there waiting for it in front of you. If you aren’t fast enough, he will use his big paws to get your attention. He is an 80 pound goofy puppy, but he’s not too high energy. He enjoys his daily training, walks (and runs), and playing with the tennis ball or a chew bone. Spartacus is pretty quiet although he will bark a little bit every now and again to show he is protecting his home. Spartacus is working on sit and lay down. He is house trained (not a single accident at his foster home) and learned the dog door in the first 36 hours. He does very well in his crate, which is where he stays when no one is home. He likes to chew every now and then, but once you correct him on what he can and can’t chew he is fine. He also likes to do some counter surfing, which we are working on. Spartacus sleeps with the whole pack (3 GSDs and two humans) in the bed and demands morning cuddle time! He is great around his two foster brothers, but will need a proper introduction to new dogs and people. Spartacus is not confrontational but can be annoying to his foster brothers and if they get upset Spartacus is not afraid to stand his ground. He does not necessarily need any dog siblings and would be fine as an only dog as long as his people give him lots of love and attention. Spartacus has not been around small dogs or children so we are not sure how his interactions would be with them, but as big as he is and as excited as he gets to see his humans, small children are probably not ideal. Not sure about cats but he has seen a cat and squirrels from a distance and the feeling is he would not do well with cats. When Spartacus has been out in public with his pack he has done just fine- including walking along some busy streets. But we are always keeping him on a short leash with an eye out for our surroundings and don’t allow anyone to randomly come and greet him. He’s protective of his people and needs a proper introduction to all new humans and animals. He’s a sweet, playful, and beautiful boy that for the right family will make a great addition. It’s important that his new family understands that German Shepherds can be protective of their surroundings as well as understanding that physical activity and mental stimulation are instrumental in keeping him happy. Spartacus is being fostered east of Raleigh- near Bunn, NC. If you think you can offer Spartacus his furever home, please reach out to your adoption coordinator.
