Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. Meet Gidget! She is a 3-year-old, 75 pound ball of energy, who loves all people (even the littles) and other dogs! Gidget has bounced around in the past few months. Her original owners were quite a bit older, and they decided to move to a community where they would not allow dogs. They were going to take her to the pound, but a nice lady took Gidget in. Gidget was taken care of very well when it was time to go to the vet, but Gidget was lacking the full-time attention commitment that a GSD needs. Her 2nd owner traveled for work and had recently decided to move. Lucky by word-of-mouth Gidget found an awesome foster home. Gidget still has that young, playful youth that sometimes annoys her three fur sisters and her foster brother. In a household with a total of five dogs, Gidget has done very well. She is so outgoing that she has been able to play with all her other housemates. She really loooves playing chase with Teddy (who’s also available for adoption). Oh, and this girl knows how to backup. I have never seen a dog that will randomly walk backwards. It’s very cute and entertaining. Gidget can be a little needy and really loves being around her people. She is going to need someone to be at home with her most of the time. She is crate trained and will stay in her crate if you leave, but she will voice her displeasure for awhile. When you come and go, it would be best if Gidget is either in her crate or somewhere secure. She also loves to play this game of watch me run out the front door and catch me! It would be nice to find her a home with another playmate with a similar level of energy. Gidget is so curious of everything around her and hasn’t been afraid of anything! Her favorite toy so far is a plastic bottle covered by a stuff-less critter! She loves the crinkle noise it makes. The flirt pole is super fun as well. The best time she has is to snatch a toy, run and then drop it like nothing ever happened. She is so goofy and silly. Oh, and be prepared that she is going to be your permanent shadow if you are walking around your house. She wants to know everything that you are doing especially if it involves the kitchen. She hasn’t counter surfed yet, but her nose is right on the edge of the counter, so beware! When she is not playing, she is an absolute cuddle bug. She will snuggle with you on the couch when it’s quiet time. Sometimes she thinks she is a lap dog, but she is easily corrected. She can be out of her crate at night (she prefers to be on the bed with you). She is potty trained and has not had any accidents in the house. Gidget can also sleep in her crate at night without giving any issues, except maybe a grumble. Oh, and did I say she talks! She loves to grumble, huff, howl, bark just to show you how she feels. She’ll even tap her feet when she is super excited! It’s very cute to watch. And we can’t forget about training! Gidget has some naughty manners that will need to be corrected with consistent training. She’s very smart and loves to learn but with all the hyper energy it can be a challenge to get her to focus. High value treats work well when training. She does know sit, go to bed, and stay (for a short time) She does pull on a leash, will jump on doors & occasionally people and she is very protective of her crate. If she is in her crate, she will bark at any of the other dogs if they come near her in the crate. Her foster parents were told that she likes to eat in her crate, but there is a catch, no other dogs can walk by her crate. Her foster parents allow her to eat away from her crate, so she is more focused on eating rather than worrying about where everyone is. If you are looking for an active, yet awesome snuggler, then she is the dog for you! She is very smart so making training fun will be a great way to incorporate good habits. Gidget is being fostered near Raleigh, NC. If you’d like to add her to your family, please reach out to your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at www.freedomgermanshepherdrescue.org. *Our volunteers process applications as quickly as they can, however it can take a little time.
