Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. Flora is estimated to be around seven years old. She’s currently around 75lbs and looks amazing compared to the condition she was in when she first came into rescue. When she arrived at her foster home, she was emaciated, with skin and ear infections, and missing half her fur. To top it off she was pregnant, which we didn’t know until there was an unexpected surprise one morning. We know for sure she was neglected, but there’s likely more to her sad, pre-Freedom story that we’ll never know. That’s all in the past, though! This beautiful girl is back to being in great physical shape and she’s ready to find her furever family! Here’s what her foster mom has to say about her: Flora wants to be your soulmate. Give her some time and a reason to trust you and she will work with you. She will be restless at first, and will choose her own spot to settle in, but with consistent kindness and care for her needs, she is a great companion. She lives for your touch and is a calm girl in the house. She is feeling healthy now and yearns to be off the leash, so she will need a home with a fenced in yard. She likes being outside, but will take advantage of it best when you are outside with her. She loves for you to sit beside her in the yard and pet her. She does not like new situations, like walks in unfamiliar places, but could get acclimated by doing it repeatedly a little at the time. Same with learning to enjoy the car, but a little at the time. Flora had years of living in neglectful circumstances, but she’s as sweet as can be. She is very good with a puppy I acquired, and they play happily. I don’t know how she is with cats. We had an adult dog over for a few days, and Flora was tolerant. Over time she may enjoy adult dogs, especially if she sees equal treatment and attention. Ideally, Flora would be best with people that are at home a lot, and a fenced yard is a must. She wants to know where you are and is alert to anything changing in the environment. She is aware of vibe and fine with friends coming over. She will come over to them after a bit and check them out. She is definitely capable of bonding and is just now learning how to be a ‘cared for’ dog. In the ten week period I’ve had her, once she realized she could trust me, she blossomed more each day. You will know you’re gaining her trust when she eats in the room where you are, when she looks you in the eye, and finally when she swings her tail happily. In a dog that had to feel hopeless just a few months ago, it’s a joy to see expressions of happiness and contentment. Flora is crate trained and house broken. She is being fostered in Asheville, NC.If you think you can offer Flora her furever home, please reach out to your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at www.freedomgermanshepherdrescue.org.
