Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. Hi, I'm Balto! It’s a pleasure to meet you! I am a high energy sheppie pup who is about 4 months old. I am a typical puppy in that my energy levels go from 0 to 100 and then 100 back to 0 throughout the day. My brother and I love to sprint around the house chasing, barking, and chewing on each other. When we start to wrestle, things can get pretty intense! I would love to have a doggy playmate at my new home who will play fun, rough and tumble games with me. I haven’t met a cat before, but my foster parents have these funny looking things called chickens, and I want to play with them so bad! They make sounds just like my squeak toys! I usually listen when mom asks me not to chase them, but it’s really hard to pull myself away sometimes. When I get worn out from all the play, I love to snuggle up against my people, get pets, and listen to everyone tell me what a good handsome boy I am! My foster mom says I am doing well with my house training. I still have the occasional accident, but its only when no one sees me glance at the door to outside because I do it so quick! Mom is trying to teach me to paw the door, or “ask” to go out when I need to. I know how to “sit” and “lay down” for treats. I come when I am called (almost always), mom says I can be a bit “stubborn” compared to my brother but I just like to think I’m “too smart” and know what I want. I do have a short puppy attention span, so training will need to be done in shorter periods throughout the day. I will always “go in the crate” when asked. Once in there I settle very quickly and will take a nice nap. At night I will sleep 8 hrs straight in there! Being young as I am, I will definitely need to continue with crating for a while to be successful in house training at my new home. I lovvve toys and chewing. Once in awhile I try to chew things that aren’t toys… but how’s a pup supposed to know?! If you replace whatever I’ve found with an acceptable chew thing – I will gladly make the swap. I will need close supervision until I’ve mastered the art of telling toys apart from phone chargers. Compared to my brother, Ralphie, I am more submissive, playful, and happy to meet other dogs and people outside of our "pack". I can be a little scared when initially meeting other dogs that are bigger than me but then I lovvvvves to run, chase, and play. One thing my new family will need to continue to work with me on is the guarding of my food and high value treats like bones. You see, food was hard to come by when I was a baby so when I have a bowl to myself, I am sooo scared someone may take it away. I am working really hard on getting comfortable with my foster parents touching my bowl or bone, but will require continued training in this area. I won’t bother you while you are eating though! And I take treats very nicely. I will also share toys with no problem at all! If you meet me, I am just positive that you will fall in love! I promise to make you smile every day with my puppy cuteness, and with continued training I will be a fabulous dog. My adoption contract will require me to be neutered AND have professional training. I am from the same litter as Ralphie, Velma and Scooby Doo! If you think you can offer me my furever home, please reach out to your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at www.freedomgermanshepherdrescue.org I am being fostered near Raleigh. *Our volunteers process applications as quickly as they can, however it can take a little time. For this reason, the specific dog you apply for may not be available by the time your application is processed. If that happens we will do our best to find another perfect match for your family.*
