Learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. This is Maxwell (Max) in one word LOYAL!
This 4 year old boy has been through a lot in his life but that does not stop him from wanting to please his people every minute of the day and night!
ENERGY LEVEL. He is pretty mild mannered but if you want to take him out on a run he's up for it (although he can get by with fetching a ball and taking walks). He didn't know what a tennis ball was, but the joy he has chasing them now is awesome. Maxwell is pretty quiet although he will bark a little bit every now and again to show he is protecting his home.
TRAINING BACKGROUND. Maxwell will sit, lay down, walks (and runs) well on a leash. He knows shake and we are working on stay. Max is mostly house trained and has learned the dog door, but has had an occasional accident the first week or so with us (but he is learning the ropes well). He is crate trained and does very well in a crate although we are not using it too much anymore ( he now sleeps with the whole pack (3 GSDs and two humans) in the bed.
DOG/CAT/PEOPLE/KID. He is great around his two foster brothers although we did a proper off property introduction with the dogs (as we do with all dogs). HE does not necessarily need any dog siblings and would be fine as an only dog as long as his people give him lots of love and attention. He does need a proper introduction to people as well. He doesn't show any aggression toward anyone but he is cautious around new individuals and we therefore give him time and space before fully interacting with people. We have not had him around children and he would probably do fine with older dog savvy kids. Not sure about cats but he is very interested in squirrels.
ENJOYS. Sleeping on soft beds, lying next to his humans, being with his humans, pleasing his human, rolling over and getting belly rubs in soft green grass. He will drive his head into your hands and chest in hopes of getting the best head rubs and hugs that he can. Being with his people is where he wants to be whether it is when we all wake, working from home as he sits in the office or chilling on the couch with a movie or football.
WORKING ON. Maxwell knows there is good food up on those counters and will do the occasional counter surf, but not too much and never causes a problem. We are also working on his skin condition and growing some hair back caused by stress and fleas from back in the day. Also working on his introduction to people. He is velcro and wants nothing more than to please his people and be with them (especially fond of the males in his life)
BACKGROUND. Max (Maxwell) had been seen in a dog pen (with a female husky) for approx 2.5 years on our (foster parents and 2 foster brothers) running route. We were sad for him when we ran by seeing him all dirty and not looking too happy. One day we saw a "free dog" sign and got into action to rescue him. We made it happen and brought him in as a foster for the rescue. Before that he was a pet (along with the husky) of an elderly couple. The man of that couple passed away and the most recent owner took the dogs to his house. Little did we know how special and caring he is. He's missing some hair from his back and hips probably caused by stress, fleas, and skin infection. That is already getting better with some medications, medicated shampoo, and good nutrition, and LOTS OF LOVE (and belly + head rubs). He is learning the good life of love, comfort, activity, good food, and relaxation. If you are looking for a loyal and caring boy Maxwell may be for you but be ready to provide lots of love and attention!
