~~Hi! My name is Maya.  I’m a 3 year-old German Shepherd with a lot of love and cuddles to give! Not much is known of my first few years, but by the time animal control picked me up I was in a rough state.

My back leg was badly mangled and the doctor working at the animal shelter had to amputate my back leg. I was unsure of what to think of this at first, but I’m glad they took care of me. Freedom German Shepherd Rescue decided to take a chance on me and help me get adopted. They placed me with my first foster family. I didn’t make such a great impression at first.

What’s a girl to do? I just lost my leg and was having such a horrible fur day, so traumatizing! The first fosters were a great family, but sadly was a bit too much for me to handle. I was just confused and needed the right guidance, but also needed someone with a tremendous amount of patience to help me recover.

Freedom GSR found a temporary boarding home at Highland Vet Clinic in Fayetteville that took great care of me. I continued to be grumpy due to so much change in such a short time. To make matters worse I had a case of heartworms! OY! When it rains it pours apparently. It felt like I was at the clinic forever. While I was there, it gave the rescue time to find another foster family that could help socialize me and work with me.

A nice couple that recently volunteered to foster for the rescue decided to take a chance on me. I was considered all the bad things a dog could potentially be labeled! But within the first few days I wormed my way into my new foster family’s hearts. No pun intended!

It has been so amazing being with a family with other dogs! I’ve been very social and trying to play with them. They don’t seem to know what being a dog is all about, but I’m showing them - 3 paws at a time! My foster mom says I'm such a snuggle bug and I love to sleep on the couch while they are watching TV. She thinks it’s cute when I tackle the pillows on the couch and make myself a little pillow fort around my head.

Since foster dad is a goofball, he claims I’m the leader of the Order of the 3rd Paw. What can I say? He has a wild imagination. Don’t listen to him, I didn’t try and recruit my oldest foster sibling who needed ACL surgery at the time, I swear! *shifts eyes back and forth* Since my oldest foster sibling had surgery, she’s become a regular four-legged pup again, leaving me in my Order all alone.  It's all good, I still love her and my other nutty foster sibling so much.

Just in case you are wondering, I don’t even realize I have a missing leg. I can haul butt very quickly when I’m chasing after a critter in the back yard or a ball that my younger foster sibling and I fetch. My foster dad says I’m a horrible fetcher…. I don’t know what that means, I clearly bring the ball back, I just don’t want to let it go! I tell ya, my foster mom loves me very much and loves to cuddle me. But my foster dad is clearly living in his own fantasy land.
